American Bus Association: Elevating an Industry’s Voice Through Communication and Thought Leadership
The Challenge
The American Bus Association represents an industry that connects communities, supports tourism and local economies, and provides transportation options nationwide. Yet the motorcoach and group travel industry’s economic contributions and importance to the transportation system are not always fully recognized by policymakers, media or the public. With Fred Ferguson taking the helm as President and CEO, ABA sought to elevate the organization’s profile, introduce its new leadership, support advocacy priorities and strengthen its reputation as an authoritative industry voice.
The Action
CS-Effect conducted strategic communications and consistent messaging across executive, research, advocacy and association initiatives. We created tailored media outreach for national business, transportation, travel and regional outlets, supported ABA’s strategic plan announcement and developed communications planning for its centennial, and developed a crisis communications framework using CS-Effect’s Assess, Communicate, Evaluate (ACE) model
CS-Effect also supported the announcement of Fred Ferguson as ABA’s new President and CEO, turning the leadership transition into an ongoing platform for visibility. To help ABA explain the real-world implications of tariffs and cross-border trade disputes, CS-Effect researched market-specific tourism impacts, prepared industry reaction messages, drafted executive opinion pieces and targeted regional publications. This approach connected a national policy issue to the businesses, destinations and communities most directly affected.
CS-Effect initiated outreach to AARP that led to ABA President and CEO Fred Ferguson interviewing AARP Research Senior Research Advisor Lona Choi Allum about travel trends among adults 50 and older. CS-Effect developed interview messaging and talking points addressing affordability, accessibility, sustainability, social connection and group travel. The interview was prominently shared on social media, extending ABA’s thought leadership beyond its traditional membership and trade audiences.
Results
CS-Effect helped ABA achieve visibility across national business media, targeted transportation and travel industry outlets, and regional publications. The program combined published advocacy op-eds, executive interviews, research-driven stories and an AARP collaboration with longer-term communications infrastructure, including strategic and crisis communications plans.
The result was a sustained effort to position ABA and its new CEO as authoritative voices on the economic, policy and consumer issues shaping motorcoach transportation and group travel — rather than relying on isolated announcements alone.
